The technology behind hot-dip galvanizing

Hot-dip galvanizing is one of the most modern methods of corrosion protection. The coating's long life, the low cost, and the economic efficiency make this a popular method amongst the consumers. Hot-dip galvanizing is a simple, easy to understand technology, the main principle is that after cleaning the surface of the steel structure it is dipped into a bath of molten zinc. The iron and zinc reacts, this creates the protective zinc coating. This creates a series of distinct alloys, the metallurgical bond between them guarantees that the coating will resist external mechanical impacts extremely well. Furthermore, galvanizing creates an electrochemical corrosion protection, which protects the base metal even if smaller damages have occurred.

Hot-dip galvanizing is a versatile protection method. If used under atmospheric conditions, it can be utilized in almost every field, and it even has some thermal and chemical resistance. The zinc coating can last up to 50 years, depending on the corrosion load of the environment where it is used. However zinc coating is not recommended for acidic and strongly alkaline environments.

If required, the hot-dip galvanized steel can be painted (duplex method). This can extend the life of the protection even more, and can also ensure compliance with specific aesthetical requirements. However prior to painting, the customer should gather information about the specific requirements for painting galvanized surfaces.

DAK Acélszerkezeti Kft. operates one of Hungary's biggest hot-dip galvanizing plants. The maximum size of structures that we can galvanize is restricted by the size of the bath. The maximum dimensions for single dip galvanized parts: length: 12,0 m, width: 1,1 m, height: 1,8 m. In some cases larger structures can be galvanized by rotation. The maximum weight is 5 tons.

In compliance with the European standard the thickness of the zinc coating is at least 45-48 mm, but if required we offer greater layer thickness, based on the result of a galvanizing test.
